We had an opportunity to work and implement this project with Tshengis’ Igugu Lakho in researching the need for Early Childhood Development(ECD) in the Limpopo province. In Polokwane, we managed to find a community, Bahananwa Circuit, under the Blouberg Municipality where we created and planned for an ECD project named, Train Up A Child that took place in 2016. We worked with various government departments and other organization with the community that did work like ours.
The project was designed to help develop out of school youth find a career in ECD. The Train Up A Child project would train community members to be Early Childhood Development practitioners who would enhance ECD centres in the community by helping to provide good education for the children, also helping with the expected day to day running of the centre, imparting their knowledge from the course to the work done at the ECD centre as they would be training in the National Certificate in Early Childhood Development NQF Level 4 simultaneously.
This is for a 12-month period of working and studying. The project, throughout its duration, would be in constant contact with other organizations in the community to fulfill this role. The youth and some elders of the community are left to sustain the work done for ECD centres and to make sure that quality work is maintained. The project then monitors and support the youth.
